ABOUT ALVA

Alva Anderson was born in the Bronx to parents from Charleston who fostered a great appreciation for the Arts. She began piano lessons at the age of 10 and viola lessons at 16.

The ‘singer’ was revealed when Alva was on tour in Europe playing viola with a chamber music ensemble. During a late night jam session in Switzerland, she was invited to sing ‘My Funny Valentine’. The feeling  was intoxicating. She was HOOKED!

Back in NYC she began to frequent jam sessions and attend vocal and instrumental workshops with Barry Harris, Billy Taylor, Sheila Jordan. John Blake, Jimmy Seigler, Billy Mitchell, Jimmy Owens, and Turtle Island String Quartet.

Alva holds degrees in Music and Education from Long Island and St John’s Universities. She taught music in the NYC public schools by day and gigged by night and created two one woman shows : The Elegant One, the Life in Music of Ella Fitzgerald and Fine Brown Frame, the Music of Ruth Brown.

Alva and her husband Allen moved to Charleston 8 1/2 years ago and are proud and live in a city whose history and culture have brought so much to this nation and the world.
